Case Study – Farmer Luxton’s

25 June

Farmer Luxton’s is a family owned farm shop and cafe on the outskirts of Okehampton. The shop sells high quality food and drink including lamb and beef reared a matter of metres away on the home farm. Selling as much produce from Devon and the Westcountry as possible, Farmer Luxton’s is all about sustainable, local supply chains.

Using funding from the LEADER programme’s Greater Dartmoor Local Enterprise Action Fund, Stuart Luxton was recently able to expand his existing shop and include a new cafe area and modern kitchen. The DR Company helped Stuart with the application process for the funding which ultimately awarded him 40% of his overall costs for the project.

“I didn’t realise how helpful the DR Company were going to be when I first approached them to ask about funding from the GD LEAF. They helped me put my ideas into words and evidence how I could make them work. The money contributed hugely to the expansion, and the process of application helped solidify my business plans.”

Being granted funding towards 40% of costs meant that Stuart and his wife Lynette were able to put their ideas into action, expanding the existing shop space to increase the fresh food counter size, modernising the existing kitchen and creating a light and welcoming seating area for the cafe. Just some of the purchases the funding helped to buy were a new state of the art Rational oven, a barista coffee machine and new counter display cases. The oven alone is so sophisticated it has by itself increased efficiency and productivity.

Thanks to the new building, refurbishments and improved equipment, Stuart and Lynette have taken on 6 new staff, including a butcher’s apprentice and kitchen staff. Sales have increased and the farm shop and cafe have seen customer numbers go from 700 a week to over 1,200 a week in just six months since the new building opened.

The family farm is still worked by Stuart’s parents as well Stuart and his wife who live on site with their three young children. All the beef and lamb are reared, butchered and packaged on Luxton land, with the farm being only five minutes drive from the farm shop.

The farm shop has a light, spacious feel and the shelves are stocked with tempting food produce. Farmer Luxton’s supports local wherever possible and has an impressive array of Devonshire and Westcountry produce including Taw Valley Brewery, Hunts Cider, and Dartington Dairy, three businesses who have also received support from the DR Company to successfully apply for funding. This is a local rural business that is supporting other local rural businesses, and its increased productivity and profitability have been enabled directly as a result of being awarded LEADER funding from the Greater Dartmoor LEAF.
